LEE Yi Wei Angus 李一葦 Biography: Angus Lee (b.1992) is one of the most versatile performer-composers of his generation, having been featured in his capacities as flautist, composer and conductor at major international music festivals across Asia, Europe and North America. As a flautist, Lee is recognised as one of Hongkong's foremost performers specialising in new music. He has been a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2016, working with some of today's leading composers including Unsuk Chin, Brett Dean, Du Yun, and Toshio Hosokawa. He has also performed as soloist in Pierre Boulez's Mémoriale (...explosante-fixe...Originel) at the composer's memorial concert in Lucerne, with the LFA Orchestra-Ensemble under Matthias Pintscher. He has also stepped in at short notice to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic's ZeMu! Ensemble, featured at the 2023 edition of New Vision Arts Festival (HK). He has also performed at numerous local festivals, including the CityU Arts Festival, HKUST's Cosmopolis Festival, Tai Kwun's Laundry Steps lunchtime concert series, Tom Lee Music's online recital series during the pandemic, as well as LCSD's Our Music Talents and City Hall Virtuosi series. Most recently, Lee's performance of Camilo Mendez's solo and chamber music for flute was released in 2024 in the composer's monograph album, Distant Fragments , by the Austrian new music label, KAIROS. As a composer, Lee was largely autodidactic, but has received initial instruction in composition from Poly Ng and Maurice Poon; since 2016, he has benefitted from studying with a number of composers at international composition academies, including Franck Bedrossian, Oscar Bianchi, Frédéric Durieux, Philippe Manoury, Christian Mason, Isabel Mundry, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Yann Robin and Johannes Schöllhorn. His numerous chamber and ensemble works have been premiered by the, among others, Ensemble Intercontemporain (FR), Ensemble Modern (DE), Ensemble Multilatérale (FR), HereNowHear (US), Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Klangforum Wien (AT) and Subaerial Collective (US) at the likes of Gaudeamus Muziekweek (NL), ilSUONO Contemporary Music Week (IT), IRCAM ManiFeste (FR), New Vision Arts Festival (HK), Seoul International Computer Music Festival (KR), SPLICE IV Festival (USA) and Ticino Musica Festival (CH). Lee's composition output has also shifted towards larger creative forces in recent years, with his first opera, Chasing Waterfalls , premiered at Germany's Semperoper Dresden to critical acclaim in 2022, as well as the commissioning and premiere of his orchestral diptych - consisting of the works Des flammes... (2023-24) and ... aux cendres (2024) - by the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 2024. Lee is equally sought after as a conductor specialising in new music. In 2020 he was selected as a conducting fellow at Ensemble Modern's International Composers and Conductors Seminar, where he studied unnder conductor Stefan Asbury. As an advocate for emerging compositional voices, he has led the premiere of works by young composers with the likes of Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and the Neu Vocalsolisten Stuttgart at, among others, Ticino Musica Festival (2018 & 2022), the ...cresc... biennale for actual music Frankfurt-Rhein-Main (2023) and the ECLAT New Music Festival in Stuttgart (2024). In 2023, he also stepped in at short notice to lead the Asian premiere of Michel van de Aa's music theatre, The Book of Water, at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. In 2024, he made his first appearance with HKU's University Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Leonard Bernstein's Candide Overture and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony no.5 in D minor . Lee has served as an assistant lecturer at The University of Hong Kong's Music Department since 2022, where he coordinates all performance courses in addition to teaching elementary music theory, conducting, chamber music, as well as supervising undergraduate-level practice-based research projects. He concurrently teaches woodwind chamber music on a part-time basis at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, as well as having served as flute faculty at the Lucerne Festival Academy between 2022 and 2023. - CHAN Sze Rok 陳詩諾 | Hong Kong Composers' Guild
CHAN Sze Rok 陳詩諾 Currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Music at the University of Hong Kong, Chan Sze-rok is pursuing a composition research programme under the supervision of Prof. Chan Hing-yan. She obtained her Bachelor’s and MPhil degrees from the same university. She was awarded the best composition at the New Generation in 2005 and won the first prize at the International Music Competition Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest in Romania in the same year. Her commissioned works include an orchestral piece composed for the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, a trio for RTHK Radio 4, a quintet for Musicarama and a string quartet for Szymanowski Quartet. Apart from music, her interest in theatre brought her opportunities to work with All Theatre Art Association (ATAA). In 2010, she composed for and performed live music on stage as a character in ATAA’s multimedia theatre production "E-Garden". Her latest collaboration with the group were "Fool La La" in 2012 and "Spiral of Life" in 2013, and for both of these multimedia productions she composed music as the music director. YIU Hon Fai Cliff 姚漢輝 早年遠赴奧地利維也納音樂院深造, 主修作曲,理論,副修鋼琴,小提琴與指揮。師承Prof. R. Portisch。 留學期間曾參加波蘭華沙作曲班,主要教授包括K. - CHENG Zen In Michelle 鄭心言 | Hong Kong Composers' Guild
CHENG Zen In Michelle 鄭心言 A Hong Kong-born composer and music educator. Graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts majoring in music composition, Cheng soon pursued her studies in Music Education at Hong Kong Baptist University. She is currently a MA student at the Iceland University of the Arts, a full member of the Hong Kong Composer s’ Guild and a Registered Teacher in Hong Kong. Cheng is enthusiastic about composition for educational purpose. Her work The Time Train (2018) was selected to be published in the Hong Kong Children’s Choir 50th Anniversary Album, performed by the renowned choir, and chosen by the Diocesan Boys’ School Choir as one of their repertoires in 2021. Cheng has a consuming passion for vocal music composition. She entered the finals of the 6th International Choral Composition Competition Japan – in honour of her work Mens Agitat Molem (2020). Her a cappella work Anyone Here? (2020) was selected to be one of the programmes in the Hong Kong Contemporary Music Festival 2020. Apart from vocal music, Cheng’s commissioned work The Outcry (2019) for guitar solo was performed throughout the 2nd Composition Workshop held by the European University of Cyprus, whilst she was one of the selected international composers in the event. 鄭氏為香港土生土長的作曲家及音樂教育工作者,先後畢業於香港演藝學院作曲系及香港浸會大學教育學系。現為冰島藝術大學碩士生、香港作曲家聯會會員及香港註冊教師。 鄭氏熱衷於創作用於音樂教育的作品。她所創作的 時光車 (2018) 被收錄於香港兒童合唱團五十週年歌集內,並由該合唱團首演,及後獲拔萃男書院合唱團選為該團的年度曲目之一。鄭氏近年集中於編寫聲樂作品,其中她的無伴奏合唱作品 Mens Agitat Molem (2020) 為第六屆日本國際合唱作品比賽的決賽曲目,而她的另一首無伴奏合唱作品 人在嗎? CHAN Wing Wah 陳永華 Prof. Chan was the first Resident Composer of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His orchestral works including 8 Symphonies, 7 of them published by Hugo Productions were recorded by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and Voronezh State Symphony Orchestra in Russia, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. The music score of Symphony No.7 ‘Great Wall’ was published by Beijing People’s Music Publishing House. His international awards include First Prize in the International Double Reed Society Composition Conest, USA; the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Award from the Asian Composers League and the 20thCentury Masterpiece Award by the China Culture Promotion Society, Beijing. Locally he received the Composer of the Year Award from the Hong Kong Artists' Guild (1991), the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award (1992), TVB Children Song Gold Award, CASH Golden Sail Music Awards 2004 and 2007. His recent works were performed in the International Society for Contemporary Music-World Music Days Festival in Stuttgart, Germany; Summer Music Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia; Trieste Prima Festival in Trieste, Italy; Alesander Tansman Music Festival in Lodz, Poland; Festival LIM 2Mil in Madrid and the Festival BBK in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain; Klang-Klee Festival to commemorate Paul Klee in Winterthur and Bern, Switzerland; and music festivals in Argentina, Korea and Japan. Prof. Chan became Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society(founded 1956) since 1995 and has been leading this choir with regular concerts and occasional concert tours to perform oratorios and other masterpieces. He has conducted orchestras in Shanghai, Beijing, Macao, Shenzhen, Gwangju(Korea) in addition to the HK Philharmonic Orchestra, HK Sinfonietta, HK Chinese Orchestra and HK Strings. Chan is Chairman of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong and a Council Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He also serves as advisor to numerous groups including the China Broadcasting Folk Orchestra (Beijing) and the Hong Kong Dance Company. He had also served as a member of the Arts Development Council for over ten years, Chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild 1993-2004 and the Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund 1996-2006. The Hong Kong Government appointed him Justice of the Peace in 2000. He was invited to become a member of the Chinese Musicians Association in 2009. Prof. Chan graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a BA in Music. He further studied composition at the University of Toronto and earned his Master and Doctor of Music degrees on a British Commonwealth Scholarship. He had also attended the Darmstadt Summer Course in New Music on a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service. He was Professor of Music of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and had served as Chairman of the Music Dept and Deputy Dean of Arts. He is now Associate Director of the School of Professional And Continuing Education, The University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE) and Head of its Centre for Creative and Performing Arts. LI Kar Yee 李嘉怡 LI Kar-yee is a Hong Kong-born composer. She produced numbers of concerts in the public with her compositions of different genres performed, including orchestra, ensembles, choir music, electronic music and multi-media productions. She collaborated with artists from different medias with her compositions premiered in recent years, including 2022 New Music Festival in Seoul (Korea), Flowing Sound in 2019, HK Musicarama in 2017, 2009 and 2006, HKAPA 30th Anniversary Concert, La Sax the 7th Annual Concert, Spotlight Series 3 – Rendering, Spotlight Series 2 – Sing East Hit West, Hell Hot New Music Festival, The Carmerata Annual, The Bel Canto Singers Annual Concert and HK-Macao Collaboration Concert. Li’s compositions were also awarded as the best composition in the HK New Generation Composition Competition in 2006 and 1st runner-up in 2003, and selected as the HK Young Composer Representative in the Bangkok ACL (Asian Composers’ League) in 2005. After receiving her Master Degree of Music with full-scholarship in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Li committed actively in music education and promoting creative art for the young generation. She has been teaching composition and music creating courses at the HK Academy for Performing Arts and Education University of Hong Kong. MAK Clarence 麥偉鑄 Clarence Mak was born in Hong Kong. After graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Pennsylvania State University in USA, he returned to Hong Kong with his master degree, as a free-lance composer giving talks and workshops in arts institutes and organizations. He joined the music Faculty of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, teaching composition, electronic music and theory, studied music programming at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, and was invited to be the visiting artist at the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music, and the teaching professor in the International Summer Course in Monthureux Le Sec in France. Mak is a founding member of the Academy Electronic Music Studio. His compositions have been featured in concerts locally and internationally, such as Contemporary Music Festival in London, the International Computer Music Symposium in Taiwan, ISCM New Music Festivals in Romania and Hong Kong, ICMC Computer Music Festival in Beijing and Hong Kong, Electronic Music Festival in USA, Percussion Music Festival in Germany, and ACL Music Festivals. Mak was the secretary, the treasurer, and Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild from 1987 to 2008 respectively and now is the council director. He has been invited to be the adjudicator for international composers’ competitions, and the chief delegate to present Hong Kong composers' works in the Asian-Pacific Music Festivals, the International Rostrums, and the ISCM Festivals. Clarence Mak is currently Head of Composition and Electronic Music at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. 麥偉鑄出生於香港。畢業於香港中文大學和美國賓夕法尼亞州立大學,獲碩士學位後回港,以自由職業作曲家身份到多個院校及藝術機構講學和舉辦創意音樂工作坊。其後受聘於香港演藝學院,教授作曲、電子音樂和理論。曾多次到史丹福大學電腦音樂中心(CCRMA)研究音樂程式編寫及聲響學,並獲密蘇里大學堪薩斯城音樂學院邀請為訪問藝術家,及於法國索恩皮尼勒塞克國際夏日音樂營教授作曲。於1990年創辦了香港演藝學院的電子音樂室。 作品常發表於本地和海外的音樂會、音樂節、和研討會。於1987至2008年間分別曾任香港作曲家聯會秘書、司庫和副主席,現為理事,推廣音樂創作。多次獲邀擔任國際作曲家比賽評判、國際電腦音樂會議的選曲委員、及代表香港出席亞太音樂節、國際現代音樂節、國際作曲家會議。 麥氏現任香港演藝學院作曲及電子音樂系主任。 MAJOR WORKS 主要作品 Back

LUI Tsz Yan 呂芷茵 Lui Tsz Yan is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, studying the Pipa under the guidance of Zhang Ying, Principal Pipa Player of the Hong Kong Chinese Music Orchestra. Lui is proficient in performing a wide range of Chinese and Western instruments. For Chinese instruments: Pipa, Dizi, Erhu, and Liuqin, all at a professional performance level; for Western instruments: Flute, Cello, Drumsets, among others. She has also attained Grade 2 (Highest Level) in Chinese Music Theory from the Central Conservatory of Music and Grade 8 in Music Theory from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), with years of ensemble performance experience. Currently, Lui serves as an executive committee member and Cello section player of the Hong Kong New Tune Music Orchestra, as well as a Dizi player in the Chung Chi Chinese Orchestra of CUHK and Pipa player in the Yue Pipa Ensemble. In recent years, Lui has actively explored composition, with published works including Western chamber ensemble “Autumn Sorrow” and Plucked-string chamber ensemble “A Glimpse of Memories”.
