Is there such a little space to appreciate Chinese music given its long history? Composer Leung Chi-cheung will answer this question from different perspectives in history, composing, performing, conducting and even marketing. A central and crucial feature of her music is its representation of human empathy. This empathy arises not only as a result of her composition titles, but of the technical implications and other deeper inner workings of such pieces as well. In this lecture, she will take the audience onto her musical journey that is highly emotional and personal. 5 April - Searching for Magic: The Music of Christopher Coleman Speaker: Dr. Christopher Coleman Moderator: Dr. Austin Yip In this lecture, Composer Christopher Coleman will present a sampling of his works. A polystylistic composer, he writes music that is serious, music that is humourous, and everything in-between. From acoustic to electronic music, tonal to atonal, Coleman’s music shares one feature throughout — a search for a magic moment where the audience feels transported.e. 12 April - My Experience and Several of My Works Speaker: Prof. Wang Qiang Moderator: Dr. Lam Lan-chee Composer Wang Qiang’s childhood years coincided with the turmoil of wartime. A number of massive political movements occurred throughout her musical journey. That could explain why her works are somehow imprinted with a certain watermark. CHAN Wai-kwong Victor 陳偉光 As a composer, Victor has produced over 200 works to date, ranging from opera, orchestral music, to numerous chamber works, choral pieces and songs, many of which are recorded and published. Major works of him include commissions for the 1997 Hong Kong Reunification, the Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group / International Monetary Fund, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France, etc. Victor joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1989, having served as Professor in Composition, Dean of General Education and Head of the Chung Chi College. He is currently Professor Emeritus of the Department of Music. Victor enjoys quiet moments of prayer and meditation. He also loves cooking and doing all kinds of housework. 陳偉光至今已完成超過二百多部作品，類型多樣，包括歌劇、管弦樂、室內樂、器樂獨奏曲、合唱及獨唱歌曲等，其中不少已灌錄及出版。陳偉光的主要作品以管弦樂居多，包括了應「九七回歸慶典」、「世界銀行及國際貨幣基金組織年會」、「中國建國五十週年慶典」、及「法國電台管弦樂團」而委約的原創音樂。自一九八九年起，陳偉光一直任教香港中文大學，歷任作曲教授、通識教育主任、及「崇基學院」院長。二零一九年獲大學授予「音樂系榮休教授」。 陳偉光最愛禱告默想的寧靜時刻。在平日的生活中，他也十分享受下廚和做各樣的家務。 MAJOR WORKS 主要作品 Back

樂動香江 情繫神州 國家藝術基金2023資助項目《香港當代民族管弦樂經典音樂作品粵港澳大灣區巡演》——「樂動香江 情繫神州」音樂會 【跨越半世紀，經典傳灣區】 香港城市中樂團成立於1994年，近30年為中華文化竭盡全力、鍥而不捨！今年，樂團榮獲【國家藝術基金2023年度傳播交流推廣項目】資助，是香港十項獲選名單中唯一的大型中樂團。未來一年藉著國家藝術基金立項資助，在大灣區展開巡演系列活動，講好香港故事。 自上世紀七十年代以來，香港中樂的發展令人矚目，同時湧現出一批具有前瞻性的出色作曲家和優秀的中樂作品。近半世紀來，這些作品講述著中國故事，也承載著港人血濃於水的家國情懷，更蘊含著中華傳統文化及其所代表的價值觀。 本次音樂會是國家藝術基金資助項目整個計劃的首場演出，音樂會陣容強大：將由音樂表演藝術家程秀榮、衞承發擔任指揮；由中國著名笛子大師詹永明、香港青年古箏演奏家姚欣及二胡藝術大師程秀榮擔綱獨奏！70餘位樂團成員將傾情演出香港當代經典中樂名曲：陳培勳氣勢恢弘的《民族交響音畫-流水》、陳能濟富有莊周哲學思辨的《夢蝶》、梅廣釗源於傳統且極具創意的《彩雲追月狂想曲》、陳永華熱情洋溢的《八駿》、麥偉鑄飄逸靈動描寫湖光山色的《古箏與樂隊-自在山雲間》、陳錦標充滿童年回憶的《小小山貝河》、羅偉倫、鄭濟民用笛子為主奏樂器訴說了家喻戶曉的民間愛情故事《笛子協奏曲-白蛇傳》、關乃忠以特殊的作曲手法和獨特的藝術風格展現民俗文化習俗風情畫的《豐年祭》等；更有鮮為人知的遺珠之作，如中國著名音樂美學家、香港作曲家葉純之1991年創作的《二胡協奏曲-辛棄疾》，在塵封32年後將在2023年9月15日晚上八點於香港大會堂音樂廳的《樂動香江 情繫神州》音樂會上重見天日！ 這些曾經令世人高山仰止的香港中樂經典作品近二十年被束之高閣，漸被遺忘……本次音樂會及本項目旨在以這些曾膾炙人口的香港經典中樂作品喚起香港及大灣區音樂界及廣大民眾對當代香港傑出文化藝術的瞭解與關注！

LAM Shun 林迅 LAM Shun, a member of Hong Kong Composers’ Guild and Vice-President of the Chinese Woman Composers’ Association is a member of the International Alliance for Women in Music , graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She studied composition, western orchestration and piano with Mr. Law Wing-fai, Dr. Chan Wing-wah and Miss Eleanor Wong respectively. Her works including both Chinese and western Chamber instrumentations’ work, Orchestral, dance music, Opera, hymns, songs and musical for children, piano works including Solo, duo & Piano concerto and also works for Konghou etc. Her compositions had been performed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Japan’s Ensemble Kochi, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Chinese Virtuosi(HK), Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, Guangdong National Orchestra, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Dun Huang Chinese Ensemble(Shanghai), Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. Her compositions had been presented in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Italy and Paris respectively. TAM Chin-fai Samuel 譚展輝 Tam Chin-fai, Samuel, is a Doctor of Music who had studied under Professor Victor Chan and Professor David Gwilt. His early performances include piano solo Peace and War, ensemble works Desire, Birds in Cage, multi-media My U-Life, and Concerto Grosso I, which won him the Yu Luan Shih Creativity Award. He worked in the field of popular music production after his first graduation and had received several essential awards. In recent years, Tam has also switched his focus to the field of music education as well as remaining active in serious and pop music composition. His works have been performed by several professional ensembles and performers, among them Swiss Contemporary Music Duo UMS ‘n JIP, Bang On A Can-All-Stars, Hong Kong Kamerata, Sregnis Singers, CAYM Ensemble, The Cantacore Society, tenor Valentin Johannes Gloor, pianists Simone Keller and Shum Kin-wai, and yangqin player Brian Lai, etc., in Italy, Switzerland, Australia, France, Mongolia and Hong Kong. His new works show great interest in Chinese subjects and attempt to blend tonal and atonal sounds in a contemporary musical context. Recent performed pieces include Moments, Three Chinese Poems, Memoir of Ying Wa, Dead Water, Kuang Fu, If Life is Unknown…, Jazzy Illusion of a Chinaman, extracts from Symphony II – Morrison, the series of Liao Zhai, Qiang Jin Jiu, etc. His string quartet Shan Shui I was selected for the final round of the 7th International Contemporary Music Contest “Città di Udine” as well as published in Italy. His choral work Deng Le You Yuan is selected for publication by Hong Kong Composers’ Guild. According to appreciations, piano work Moments has been performed in public thrice within half a year, and the abstract piece Birds’ Words from Liao Zhai has also been performed seven times already in different countries during recent years. In 2017, Tam was commissioned to write two pieces Ballad and Wailing Ghosts from Liao Zhai, that both are separately nominated to and being the finalist of Best Serious Composition ,CASH Golden Sail Music Awards 2017 and 2018. FRANCE AND HONG KONG EXCHANGE CONCERT 2019 The France-Hong Kong Exchange Concert marks a good musical exchange between Hong Kong Composers' Guild (HKCG) and the Ensemble Télémaque from France. Under this friendly musical exchange arrangement, two Hong Kong composers, namely our Chen Yeung-ping and Lee Kar-tai Phoebus, were invited last year to compose two music pieces for Ensemble Télémaque and premiered in Marseille under the baton of Raoul Lay, their music director. In exchange, Raoul Lay was invited to come to Hong Kong to conduct our local musicians to perform a Hong Kong program, featuring not only the said two commissioned pieces but also other French pieces and HKCG works. BECOME A GUILD MEMBER The following are membership categories of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild Limited. 1. Full Member (HK$300 per year) Open to any person who: • is a resident of Hong Kong or has been living in Hong Kong for the past 5 years; • is a member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Limited (CASH); or other composition organisations; • has published, released or publicly performed a minimum of 5 major works. The applicant should present these works to the Council for consideration for membership. 2. Preparatory Member (HK$150 per year) Open to student composers who are yet unable to fulfil the criteria for full membership. Any composers presently enrolled as a full-time student or studying composition privately may apply. At least one composition by the applicant should be presented to the Council for consideration for membership. Preparatory Membership will be reviewed by the Council regularly and upon invitation to become a Full Member, his or her Preparatory Membership will cease. 3. Associate Member (HK$300 per year) Shall be conferred, by invitation of the Council or by application, upon such persons who are supportive to the objectives of the Guild. Membership Benefits: All members are entitled to all of the benefit from and participate in all activities organized by the Guild, in particular to attend and make proposals to the Annual General Meeting.
