    SCHOOLS PERFORMING ARTS IN PRACTICE SCHEME “New Energy of Wind and String” A Music Composition Animateur Scheme 2015/16 Presented by LCSD, in cooperation with Hong Kong Composers' Guild Highlight and Objective A school-year-long music composition training project. For primary and secondary schools with students who have basic music knowledge as well as interested in music composition. Aims to engage the teachers, students and the whole school in the unique art form of music composition, develop the ability of music creativity, and communicate and share with others through music. Project activities include lecture demonstration, music appreciation concert, workshops, in-school concert and finale concert. Students’ creative pieces will be performed at in-school concerts as well as having a chance to be selected to perform at a public performing venue. Content Although music composition is a huge undergoing that requires years of training and experience, this requirement does not necessarily prevent new learners to achieve meaningful results within a shorter period of time. We will encourage students to discover their hidden talent by focusing firstly on sound design, rather than complicated topics like harmony and counterpoint. With the project theme “New Energy of Wind and String”, students will explore various kinds of creative sounds on voices, instruments, percussion and everyday objects, and will arrange these sounds in an organized manner in musical contexts. This will naturally lead to the studies of rhythm, notation, pitch organisation and form. Having mastered these basic skills, students will be guided to write creative types of music, for example, emphasizing on irregular phrasing, surprising melodies, dissonance chords, arrhythmic patterns, extended instrumental techniques, etc., with the ultimate aim to express their individuality through instrumental music. Each student will compose his/her own compositions.

    YIP Ho-kwen Austin 葉浩堃 Born in Hong Kong, Austin Yip’s works have been performed worldwide. Places like the United States, Argentina, Scotland, Italy, Slovenia, Korea, Japan and Australia etc. have seen traces of his performance records. His musical creations are very diverse, ranging from orchestral piece to electroacoustic works, from Western orchestral to folk instruments. All the above shows his knowledge and creativity upon different styles of music. Yip has participated in numerous music festivals, in which he has worked closely with many world-renowned performers and ensembles. Festivals he participated include the ACL-Singapore, Sguardi Sonori (Italy), World Saxophone Congress (Scotland), ISCM-Sydney etc. Yip has received commissions from the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Composers’ Guild, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, and more. Yip received his PhD and Master of Philosophy degrees at the University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Chan with the support from the University Postgraduate Fellowship and University Postgraduate Studentship. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree from the University of California, Berkeley with a “high distinction in general scholarship”. Yip is the holder of James Kitagawa Memorial Music Scholarship, Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship, Henry Holbrook Scholarship, James King Scholarship, Eisner Prize, Milton C. Witzel Memorial Prize, Rayson Huang Scholarship and CASH Best Commissioned Piece Award. Yip’s works are published by BabelScores, Ablaze Records and Hong Kong Composers’ Guild. He has taught at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Institute of Education, and is currently a lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2012, he founded the doubledeck factory.   • TANG Pan-hang 鄧斌衡 | Hong Kong Composers' Guild

    TANG Pan-hang 鄧斌衡 Pan-hang Tang obtained the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and the Master of Music degree in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, majoring in music composition with Prof. David Gwilt and Prof. Chan Wing-wah. In 2010, under the guidance of Associate Professor Robin Stevens, Tang attained the Doctor of Philosophy degree in music education in Deakin University. Tang has been working as a full-time secondary and primary school teacher. He has also been a music tutor in the Hong Kong Institute of Education, where he taught trombone. He also taught HKCEE music in Centralised Scheme of Music Training for Senior Secondary School Students. Tang is now a member of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild (HKCG), the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH), the Hong Kong Association for Music Educators (HAME), Gifted Education Council (GEC), and the Special Interest Group for Gifted Education, Creativity and Talent Development (SIGGECTD). He has been working with various performing groups, such as Ensemble Lumbricus, L’harmonie de bois, Moodywoodyand St Mark’s Alumni Band, and composes and arranges music for them.   • Call for Scores - New Generation 2024 | Hong Kong Composers' Guild

    CALL FOR SCORES - NEW GENERATION 2025 First held in 1989, the New Generation Concert aims at encouraging music creativity among young composers in Hong Kong by providing a platform for performance and exchange of musical ideas. Selected compositions for New Generation 2025 will be held on 12th June 2025 (Thursday) at RTHK Studio One and recorded by RTHK Radio 4 to be broadcast later. The concert will be performed by the Brassdivo. Submission Details: 1. This Call for Scores is open to Hong Kong residents born on or after 12th June 1995. 2. Eligible composers can only submit one work in PDF file. No other medium of the score, such as recording, is accepted. 3. The duration of each work should be within 5 minutes. An accurate duration of the work must be stated on the score. 4. The work should be written for brass quintet (2 trumpets, 1 French horn, 1 trombone, and 1 tuba). 5. If conducting is required, the composer should conduct the work himself/herself. 6. The entire score (including notation, symbols, necessary instructions to performers, and duration) must be typed and in black-and-white only. Hand-written score will not be accepted. Only the title and instrumentation of the composition in both English and Chinese can be shown on the title page. Name and the institution of composer cannot appear anywhere on the score. Violators will be disqualified. 7. Application fees: Waived for all members* of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild Limited (HKCG). HK$200 for composers who are not members of HKCG. Payment must be deposited into the Guild’s HSBC account at 636-474546-838. Please keep the deposit slip. Application without the slip will be disqualified. 8. All submissions must include a score in PDF file, a copy of Hong Kong ID, a completed application form in PDF file, and a deposit slip (if any). They should be sent via email to grace@hkcg.org on or before 6pm, 6th April 2025 (Sunday). Late applications will not be considered. * Membership must be confirmed at the time of submission. New application or application in process will not be considered as member. Selection Arrangement: 1. As an international event for radio stations, this conference enabled recordings of new music from each participating country to be played and judged by fellow radio presenters.     WONG Chun-wai 黃俊諱 Wong Chun-wai has a versatile composition profile comprising concert music, musicals and film scores. He often infuses different musical languages to evoke various atmospheres and sceneries, engaging audiences with a quasi-multimedia-art experience. More recently he is developing the idea of “21st century (late) Romanticism”, with various contemporary musical ideas and techniques incorporated into the (Late) Romantic musical language. Published and winning multiple awards across the globe, his compositions are featured in international events such as the International Rostrum of Composers, ISCM World Music Days, ACL (Asian Composers League) Festival and the Asian Youth Orchestra World Tour. His music is performed and recorded by prominent groups and musicians including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (with Jaap van Zweden, Bright Sheng, Sebastian Perłowski and others), Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie (IEMA), performers from the New York Philharmonic and soloists including Dong-Suk Kang and Jan-Erik Gustafsson. Recently he commissioned a Double Concerto by maestro Jaap van Zweden for his 60th birthday. His scores for films and advertisements are featured in international festivals including the Sound and Image Challenge Festival and Pink City International Short Film Festival, as well as on local platforms including Cable TV and Viu TV. Wong is also an active arranger. He has arranged a number of vocal and instrumental music, some of which are performed by renowned artists and singers such as Nick Vujicic, Rebecca Pan Di-hua and Harry Wong.     TAM Lok-hei Alvin 譚樂希 Born and raised in Hong Kong, Tam is currently a D.M. Candidate (Composition) at Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. He holds a B.A. in Music from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and later earned an M.Mus in Music Theory and Composition from New York University. Tam’s music highlights a variety of genres, including contemporary classical, electro-acoustic, multimedia scoring, and religious music. As a recipient of numerous awards and commissions, he was granted opportunities to collaborate with many renowned music groups, such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Manhattan Symphonie, the American Guild of Organists, The Hong Kong Children’s Choir, JACK Quartet, and Cassatt Quartet.     LAI Sheung-ping 黎尚冰 Dr. Sheung-Ping Lai is an Assistant Professor at the CCA Department, HKIED where she teaches music composition, music theory, composition pedagogy, contemporary music, and jazz study. Dr. Lai is an active composer. Her music covers a wide variety of genres and styles, and her compositions are frequently performed in public, including Western and Chinese instrumental music, electronic music, theatrical music, art songs, pop songs, choral jazz and instrumental jazz, presenting a unique synthesis of the East and the West. Her research interests include music composition, music theory, composition pedagogy, contemporary music, jazz, and cross-cultural studies of Chinese and Western music. She is the Secretary (Administration) of Hong Kong Composers’ Guild where she coordinates the annual New Generation Concert for young composers.     IP Mun-wa 葉滿華 Ip Mun Wa, graduated a Master of Art in Music from Chinese Univesity of Hong Kong and Bachelor of Education (Honors) from Hong Kong Institute of Education. He studied composition under the guidance of Dr. Lai Sheung-Ping. Ip has awarded the Champion of Music Lesson Planning Competition held by Hong Kong Association for Music Education, 2nd running up of the Chinese Music Composition Contest at Hong Kong Music Festival, winner of the HKIED’s Artistic Excellence Award (Academic)(2008) and finalist in HKIED’s Artistic Excellence Award (2006-08).     TUNG Lai-shing 董麗誠 Hong Kong composer Tung Lai Shing is among the first generation of graduates from the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 70s. He went on to pursue his study in composition at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with George Crumb and obtained his PhD.
