LI Cheuk Shing Sampson
李焯誠

Cheuk Shing (Sampson) Li is a Hong Kong-born composer and sound artist whose creative practice centers on timbral exploration, the musical organization of noise, and interdisciplinary collaborations. His work spans solo acoustic instruments, chamber ensembles, full orchestra, mixed music combining live instruments with fixed or live electronic media, and visual art settings. Li approaches the physical capabilities of instruments—particularly extended techniques and sonic textures—as dynamic, fluid architecture.

Li holds a Master of Arts in Music Composition with a minor in Computer Music from the University of North Texas, where his research concentrated on practice-based timbral manipulation. His dynamic artistic vision has led to extensive collaborations with elite international performers and ensembles, including the JACK Quartet (JACK Studio), Ensemble Dal Niente, the [Switch~ Ensemble], Nacho Gascón & the Barcelona Modern Ensemble, New Morse Code, Passepartout Duo, the Romer Quartet, and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Extending his practice across disciplines, he has created original mixed media scores and fixed media music for modern choreography with the Texas Woman’s University Division of Dance and multimedia video productions.

Recognized through highly competitive juried platforms, Li’s compositions have been selected for performance and reading at prestigious global festivals and institutions, including the SEAMUS National Conference, the June in Buffalo International Festival, the Electric LaTeX Festival, the Barcelona Modern Festival, the Toolbox International Creative Academy Festival (TICA), the JACK Studio in New York, and the Freespace Noise Fest at the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Li's creative work has been recognized with competitive honors, including winning the DoubleBell Trumpet Call for Scores, alongside finalist distinctions in the 4th Toolbox Percussion International Composition Competition and the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild New Generation Competition. His artistic endeavors have been supported by the David M. Schimmel Memorial Composition Scholarship, the Dr. Paul Gregory Bonneau Memorial Composition Scholarship, UNT’s competitive merit scholarship, and Hong Kong’s Anti-Epidemic Micro Creative Fund.

Li is a full member of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild (HKCG) and a writer member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH).
