This work is inspired by Wu Guanzhong’s Spring Breeze. Since wind cannot be directly depicted on canvas, Wu Guanzhong used a sky full of kites to evoke the fleeting, whimsical presence of the spring breeze. Similarly, this composition attempts to capture the traces of wind through the movement of kites — sometimes strong, sometimes gentle, ever-changing. The piece extensively employs the wholetone scale and parallel fourths to enhance its sense of instability and weightlessness. Most sections focus on the melodic contour of individual instruments, creating imagery of kites in motion.
