MUI Kwong Chiu
梅廣釗(主席)


Dr Mui Kwong-chiu is a renowned composer in Hong Kong. He is the Chairman of Hong Kong Composers' Guild (HKCG), Director of Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong, member of China Musicians Association, Advisor of China popular music association Harmonica professional committee, the Artistic Director of the World Dulcimer Orchestra, Advisor of Hong Kong Film Composer's Association, the Honorary Resident Composr of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association. In 2023 he received the Commendation from the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism's Commendation Scheme for his remarkable accomplishments and contributions in promoting and developing arts, culture and creative industries of Hong Kong. In 2020 he was awarded "The 14th Hong Kong Arts Development Award" Artist of the Year (Music) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2018, for his achievements in music and contribution to Hong Kong society, he was awarded the Hong Kong Baptist University Distinguished Communication Alumni Award to celebrate the Department's 50th anniversary.


Dr. Mui graduated from HKU music department and received PhD and MPhil. He also grauduated from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in cinematography, and Hong Kong Music Institute majoing in music composition. Dr Mui is a prolific composer, known for his rich portfolio encompassing cross media works, Chinese and Western orchestral pieces, theatrical, drama and dance music, music for film and television, harmonica and church music. He founded the Mui Kwong Chiu Prouction to create total music of art. His works include: (as the Composer/Script Writer/Director of 2022) "Bauhinia Blossoms" multimedia music show, Cross media Chinese Music Theatre "Intoxicating Nature " and "Ode to Water" for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, "Beautiful Hong Kong 2.0", "Thousand Sails for the Beach Concert ", "Thousand Sails for Hakka Conference", "Pondside Romance, "Story of Kam Tin", "Let Dreams Fly I, II", "Peucussive Color, "Starry Galaxy", "The Great Wall Standing in the East", drama music for plays including " Man, O Man !, "Recarnation of the Prunus Mume" for the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, "Spring Ritual. Eulogy" for the Hong Kong Dance Company, "Tea Horse Road. Ballad of the Fallen Dragon" for Hong Kong Chinese Cultural Festival 2025, "Exile SDP" for the Prospects Theatre music and music for plays: "Roshomon", " Thurder Lighting V Sunrise", "Shake, Shake Shakepere", "Border Town" for Baptist University Alumni Community, "Malan Flower" plus oratorio music for the church based on Biblical figures Joseph in the Old Testiment; Paul  and Elijia.


His orchestral works include: Double Concerto for Piano and Flute for "The Great Earth"; Symphonic Poem "Genesis" premiered by HKPhil, "the Hero" for Erhu Concerto, and the museum exhibition music celebrating the 80 anniversary of the triumph of the Sino-Japanese War; theme music for Radio Television Hong Kong "Histories of Hong Kong I-IV,". He is well known in the East Asia Pacific harmonica community - he was commissioned to compose two test pieces for Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival (APHF) for the Chromatic Harmonica and Tremolo Harmonica open competition category in 2021 in China (which was postponed to 2024 for the global pandemic), namely  "Dream of the East" and "JiangYin Capriccio". He composed the theme song the " River of Love" for  APHF in 2012 in the Opening Ceremony in KLMalaysia.


Dr Mui represents HKCG to attend music conferences of ISCM (Internal Society of Contemporary Music), ACL (Asia Composers League) and Rostrum, playing an important role in international music networking fostering interests for the Hong Kong composers.


梅广钊博士是香港作曲家联会主席,香港作曲家及作词家协会理事,中国音乐家协会会员,中囯大众音乐協会口琴专业委員顧問、香港电影作曲家協会榮譽顧問,世界扬琴乐团艺术总监 。

梅廣釗畢業於香港大學音樂系,獲頒博士(PhD)和碩士(MPhil)學位,並且是香港浸會大學傳理學電影系和香港音專理論作曲系。2023年因支持文化体育旅游及创意产业,获颁香港文化体育及旅游局局长嘉许状,以资表扬。2020年获香港艺术发展局颁授第14届香港艺术发展奖《艺术家年奖》(音乐); 因其音乐成就于 2018年获香港浸会大学传理学系于50周年颁发《𠎀出传理學人奖》。

梅廣釗博士創作豐富,包括跨媒體創作、中西管弦樂、舞台話劇音樂、聲樂合唱創作、影視作品,口琴和聖樂創作。由於其音樂和電影专業背景,梅氏糅合音樂和跨界藝術力量,透過梅廣釗製作室呈獻全方位藝術的音樂匯演,代表作包括:《紫荊花開》,《美麗香港2.0》, 海灘實景之《千帆並舉耀香江》、香港抗戰及海防博物館命名之《長城耀東方》、沉浸式音樂匯演《池邊浪漫》,沉浸式實地演出《錦田故事》、《爐峰彩叠詠孫文》、《千帆並舉迎世客》、《夢飛I, II》系列、《星韻天影》、《擊韻彩華》、和香港中樂團合作的《山花醉》、《千水情》等。另外舞台音樂以個人或或製作室的作品包括:《人,啊人!》、香港話劇團《紅梅再世》,香港舞蹈團《蘭亭. 祭姪》、香港文聯《茶馬古道. 斷龍吟》、新域劇團《蘇東坡. 五年黃州》、致群劇社《斜路黃花》、和袁立勳合作之《羅生門》、《雷雨對日出》、《沙士對比亞》、浸大劇社《邊城》和《馬蘭花開》等等,每集平均長度70分鈡以上不等。聖樂包括為播道會35 周年跨界神劇大型作品《群起的飛鹰》系列《約瑟篇》、為澳洲悉尼華聯會全劇創作的神劇《保羅》篇和《伊利亞》篇等。

梅氏其他正統音樂作品包括 《大地》钢琴、长笛、合唱管弦乐三协奏曲; 交响诗《创世纪》;二胡恊奏曲《大漠之歌》、香港电台电视部创作主题曲包括《香港歴史系列 I》,和約数十部電視劇配樂等。博物館系列包括香港歷史博物館之《廻望》和為抗戰80周年影片等配樂。

梅氏的口琴作品於亞太區成績斐然:他是中國大眾音樂協會口琴專業委員會的榮譽顧問,專注口琴大合奏的原創創作,推廣口琴作品的藝術發展。他荣获无锡 2021亚太口琴节委约创作复音口琴和半音阶公开组比赛指定曲《江陰畅想》和《梦東方》、2026亞太口琴節指定曲《亞太芳華》、中國內地华夏口琴音樂節之《華夏夢》和為馬來西亞亞太口琴節2014開幕禮創作之《博愛大同》,他亦是香港口琴協會的榮譽駐團作曲家。

梅廣釗亦多次代表香港作曲家聯會出席國際和亞洲現代音樂會議(ISCM 和ACL)致力推動當代音樂藝術的發展和国際聯繫。

  • An essay entitled ‘The mixing instrumentations of harmonica with other musical instruments as seen from the newly created harmonica compositions' was published in the book ‘Seventy Years of Hong Kong Harmonica' published by Joint Publishing Co. Ltd. in August, 2004.

  • A review entitled ‘The Fifth Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival 2004' was published in the September issue, 2004 in the quarterly publication CASHFLOW of Composers and Author's Society of Hong Kong (CASH).

  • A research paper entitled ‘New Possibilities for Chinese Instrumental Music: Compositional Techniques in Two Original Chamber Works' was delivered in the Research Colloquia in Autumn 2003 in the Department of Music at the University of Hong Kong. The paper discusses the incorporation of compositional techniques from both Chinese and Western traditions as integrated in Mui Kwong Chiu's two musical works.

  • Music Theatre and Multi Media: Teaching Resource Kit." (in collaboration with Joshua Chan) In Contemporary Music Education Campaign of the ISCM World Music Days 2002. Hong Kong: Hong Kong Composers' Guild and the Education Department, 2002.

  • ‘Analysis of Tan Dun's Ghost Opera' by Mui Kwong Chiu was first published as papers and proceedings of the Sixth Seminar on the History of New Music in China: Its Form, Craftsmanship and Aesthetics in 2000. It was later published in the same year in Collected Essays on History of New Music in China, Vol. No 6 by HKU Center of Asia Studies.

  • A feature article entitled ‘An Exploration of Coherence in Music from Pop Song to Serious Music' was published in Issue 29 in the summer of 1999 in CASHFLOW the quarterly publication of CASH. In the article, compositional techniques in both pop and contemporary music genre were discussed, with a special focus on some of Joseph Koo's modulation techniques and his twin use of modes, with illustrations from some of his pop songs serving as demonstrations.

  • Part of Mui Kwong Chiu's vocal music (serious category) from 1980 to 1999 have been listed in ‘Hong Kong Vocal Music: A General Index' among the works of other prominent Hong Kong Composers. Chinese Christians Literature Council Ltd published the collection of vocal music with the above index in March 1999, with sponsorship from Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
