MAK Yui-kan

Raphael Mak started composing at the age of 14, and has now completed around 30 works of various instrumentation ranging from solo works to symphonies. After graduation from Wah Yan College, Hong Kong, he studied music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2011 to 2015, his major instrument being the flute. He has been studying a master’s degree in urban planning at the University of Hong Kong since 2015.

Mak’s composition style has evolved from “New Age” to “pantonality” to “minimalism”. Most performances of his works took place in school events and self-organised recitals (sometimes through the Victoria City Music Workshop – VicMusic for short – that he established). His Orchestral Piece for a New Era was selected by the maestro Bright Sheng for a performance with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hong Kong Composer Showcase in May 2015.

Mak is also an active player in orienteering (a sport involving running with map and compass), and has been selected as a member of the Hong Kong Team several times. He established the Metropolitan Orienteering Club in 2014.
