2007 ISCM-ACL World Music Days –
“Music Creativity Education Campaign”

Introduction

In respond to the current Music Curriculum Guide for Primary 1 to Secondary 3 which emphasizes “Developing Creativity and Imagination” as the first of the four learning targets, the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild is launching a new year-long ISCM Music Creativity Education Campaign which will run from September 2006 through November 2007. In this Campaign, the Guild intends to make full use of the resources available in connection with Hong Kong’s hosting of the renowned ISCM World Music Days Festival, as well as the publication of research and curriculum materials developed in the previous 2002 Campaign. The publication (published by Chinese University Press) includes a set of 15 teaching modules in contemporary music, complete with curriculum materials, worksheets and classroom activities graded in different levels as per the local school’s system, coupled with a selective range of recordings as listening examples. Besides having the eye-opening opportunity to participate in an international Festival with close to 200 international composers, musicologists, musicians and music professionals, students enrolled in this Campaign will also have first-hand experience in using the teaching modules which will be taught by composers and professional music instructors who have taken part in researching and formulating the curriculum.

In this Campaign, students could gain first hand experience from visiting composers, together with the support from their own music teachers. It is expected that upon the completion of this Campaign, students can learn effectively and increase their creative ability through the use of suitable curriculum materials and effective guidance from composers and music teachers.

The ISCM Music Creativity Education Campaign is funded by the Quality Education Fund in connection with the ISCM-ACL World Music Days Hong Kong 2007.

Aims of the Campaign
1. To align with the direction of the new Music Curriculum Guide in stimulating students to create music;
2. To equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve a high level of music creativity; and
3. To enhance students’ efficacy in learning to create music.

Objectives of the Campaign
1.      To explore and enhance students’ creativity and performance potential and ability;
2.      To engage students in collaborative creativity projects;
3.      To expose students to and involve them in large scale public performances of works created by their peers;
4.      To involve students in creativity related to their cultural/living context;
5.      To generate by composers and music teachers a learning and assessment framework for creative music; and
6.      To familiarize students with the employment of such framework in evaluating their own and others’ works during the process of learning.

Details of the Campaign
·        The ISCM Music Creativity Education Campaign is organized in connection with the ISCM-ACL World Music Days Hong Kong 2007. The ISCM World Music Days is an annual international festival featuring the best and latest development in the field of contemporary music and composition. The status of the Festival parallels that of the Olympics in the field of sports, and Hong Kong has already hosted the event twice, in 1988 and 2002 respectively (Festival website: ?).
·        The activities for each participating school include 25 School Workshops, 1 Creative Music-making Lecture-Demonstration, 3 Rehearsals and 1 Festival Outdoor Performance. All activities will be conducted in the form of extra-curricular activities, except for the first 10 School Workshops (Part I of the Workshops) offering the option of being held within formal curriculum to replace part of the music lessons
·        For schools opting for the first 10 Workshops to replace part of the music lessons, each of these 10 workshops will need to take up 2 consecutive lessons so that each workshop will be around 1.5 hours.
·        Curriculum materials developed by professors, educators and current teachers will be used in the workshops. The workshops, each being 1.5 hours long, will be held on a weekly basis from October 2006 to November 2007. Teachers will have to arrange with the visiting composers the date and time of the workshops to be held in their own schools, within the time-frame given.
·        Responsible music teachers are required to be present in all Workshops to both participate and co-teach as a training programme, such that music teachers can benefit from the expertise of the visiting composers.
·        Each enrolled school will receive a complimentary set of 15 teaching modules on contemporary music published by Chinese University Press, complete with worksheets and classroom activities graded in different levels as per the local school’s system, coupled with a selective range of recordings as listening examples, valued at $?.
·        Students will participate in a Creative Music-making Lecture Demonstration to share their experience in creative music-making.
·        The finale of the Campaign will be a Festival Outdoor Performance involving all the enrolled students in presenting their themed compositions for the Festival programme. The performance will also include collaborations with professional artists and composers.
·        Workshops will be conducted in 2 parts. Student enrolment number is as follows:
*      Part I (First 10 Workshops): 35-40 students per class
*      Part II (Subsequent 15 Workshops): 25 students per class
·        It is preferable that students enrolled in Part II of the workshops have also participated in Part I of the workshops.
·        Level of Students for Enrolment:
*      Primary 3-5
*      Form 1-4
·        The enrolment fee for the whole event is HK$375 per student at $15/workshop/student.
·        Fees will only be collected from the successful schools. No refunds will be available after the fees have been paid.
·        Participating schools will be responsible for arranging their own transportation and meals for the activities held outside schools.
·        A comprehensive evaluation exercise will be conducted during the Campaign. Participating schools will be required to provide information and assistance for the evaluation.
