Experiencing Composition and Contemporary Music Series -

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, Composition Training Classes & Concerts

 

 

Introduction

 

The aims of the Experiencing Composition and Contemporary Music Series are to allow participants to engage in creating music and interactions with composers and performers so as to deepen the understanding of composing and contemporary music, as well as to develop the skills and interest in composing music. All activities are admission free. For application, please refer to EDB's Teachers Calendar.

 

This Series is divided into three Stages. There will be Interactive Lecture Demonstrations and Composition Training Classes in each Stage to be conducted in three periods in 2009 and 2010. The target audience is secondary school students, primary and secondary school music teachers. Speakers are experienced composers, musicians or university professors. Besides, two grand Concerts will be held in February and December 2010. It will feature compositions of Hong Kong composers and participants of the Composition Training Classes respectively. The target audience is students, teachers and the public. All events of the Series are free of charge. Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (2 sessions in each Stage, 3 hours per session with 6 sessions in total)

Stage I: November 2009

The target audience of the "Interactive Lecture Demonstrations" is secondary school students, primary and secondary school music teachers. Each lecture- demonstration will be specialized in a topic on a particular instrument or instrumental ensemble. It will also feature live demonstrations by musicians, coupled with score projection, audio and video playback. The lecture-demonstration will be conducted in an interactive manner so as to allow participants to experience and share the joy of music creation.

Composition Training Classes (5 sessions in each Stage, 3 hours per session with 15 sessions in total)

Stage I: October - November 2009

Stage II: May - June 2010

The target audience of the Composition Training Classes is primary and secondary school music teachers. Participants will understand different composition approaches in a systematic manner. They shall complete composition tasks inside and outside class and compose a piece as final project. Upon the completion of the course, a few compositions will be selected to premiere in Showcase on Training Class Participants' Compositions and performed by professional musicians. To deepen the understanding on music composition, participants who enroll in this course are strongly advised to attend the six interactive lecture- demonstrations.

Lecture- Demonstration Concert on Hong Kong Composers' Works

Date: 10 Feb, 2010 (Wed)

This Lecture- Demonstration Concert is a mixture of music appreciation and education. It will feature a number of Hong Kong Composers' chamber music with different instrumentation and styles. It is especially enlightening to participants with an interest in composing.

 

Each performance will be preceded by a short introduction by the composer and performers who will introduce interesting aspects during the process of composition and interpretation. The audiences are welcome to ask questions or make suggestions. This Concert allows the composers, performers and audience to engage in meaningful dialogue and interaction so as to deepen audience's understanding on local composers and performers, understand the compositional process and enhance the ability of music appreciation.

 

Showcase on Training Class Participants' Compositions

Upon the completion of 15 - session Composition Training Classes, outstanding compositions composed by the participants will be chosen by a jury of experienced composers of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild and performed by professional performers to premiere their compositions in this concert. To enhance the diversity and interest of the Concert, the compositions will be a good presentation of different instrumental combinations and styles.
