The Ensemble
The modern music ensemble Insomnio was formed in 1997 by a group of talented and enthusiastic musicians with a remarkable diversity in international backgrounds. Their goal is to explore the boundaries of contemporary music and multimedia by juxtaposing the highlights of the twentieth century repertoire with works of promising young composers.

The musicians soloistic talents and willingness to participate create an ensemble atmosphere which radiates enthusiasm. Both on and off stage one can see that Insomnio’s performers share the desire to stimulate and realize new developments in music. In the past years this approach has resulted in many concerts on stages and festivals, both at home and abroad.

Insomnio has organized festivals in the Netherlands which focused on Cuba (2001), Catalonian (2002) and Finnish (2005) contemporary music.

Since 2002, the ensemble commits itself to performing contemporary music with live electronics. In collaboration with STEIM Insomnio produced a workshop Live Electronics. In 2004, Insomnio produced the multimedia chamber opera ‘The Pitch Shifter’, structured around live electronics.

The ensemble is one of the founding members of Muziekhuis Utrecht, a cooperation of ensembles performing new music in Utrecht. Insomnio is ensemble in residence of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM).
